Why do you think they tack a sign with the speed limit into the ground at various points along the road? It's so we, as drivers, know how fast to drive.
Never drive faster than is reasonably safe. (Basic speed law, check!)
But here's the secret: If a sign says 40 mph, it really means that the speed limit is 45 mph. 45 mph would be called the actual speed limit in this situation. That's the rule. The actual speed limit is always 5 over what is written.
So I was driving along on a road marked 45 mph today, and what's the actual speed I should be driving? You guessed it! 50 mph! But it's REEEALLLY hard to do that when I was smack behind someone who was driving 44 mph. C'mon, Person! Don't you know the rule?
Disclaimer: never drive too much faster than the written speed limit when the cops are around. Cops don't know the rule either.
Oh, and P.S. When you drive by a school that's speed limit sign says 20mph with flashing lights, drive only 20mph! Flashing lights means DRIVE ONLY HOW FAST IS WRITTEN THERE ARE DEAR LITTLE SCHOOLCHILDREN WALKING ON THE ROADS ALSO PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYES PEALED.
Also, be very focused when you drive at all times, folks. Not only will you know the actual speed limit, but you'll be a whole lot safer as well.
